painted desert

by the time we arrived at the painted desert and petrified forest national park, it should have been shut, but they were running on a different time so we were sorted. it still didn't give us a long time so i only got brief facts for you.

the painted desert is caused by sediments of different materials deposited there at different eras.

it looks reet colourful and that and all.

petrified forest

the petrified forest is caused by the sediment sealing off oxygen and gradually replacing the wood with silica deposits, turning the trunks into stone over billions of years.

or because the trees seen a wolf and got scared or summat.

winslow, az

our aim for the evening was to reach flagstaff by nightfall, but a hugh accident between winslow and flagstaff meant we had to turn around and head back. a great big tanker had turned over and were on fire and that and then it all blew up. it were mental, but unfortunately it meant we had to go back to winslow.

we check into the travelodge where i manage to wrangle a discount and then we head over the road to the chinese takeaway for a dinner and some beer which we take back to us motel room and we have a reasonably early night so we can make up the time we lost tomorrow.

in the morning it's howling outside. the thunder and lightning threatens to blow the windows off, so we wait for it to die down a bit and then set off on us journey: interstate 40 towards las vegas.

flagstaff, az

we stop off at the mall on for some food, to make phone calls, to buy some clothes and most impotantly for some more coffee. once we're again tooled up we set off and ben decides to try out the video function of his digital camera.

despite the beautiful photographs we have, our journey is threatened by the constant threat of mental storms, but eventually it brightens up and our journey is a pleasant one.

kingman, az

we make a quick stop at kingman for some food and water and by now it's absolutely boiling again. as we drive up towards nevada, there's dust devils dancing delicately at the sides of the road. eventually we arrive at the hoover dam, which is arizona and one side, and on the other, nevada.
